The last of the Kodachrome...

Very long story - short version - I spent the last 2 days shooting Kodachrome - overnighted it to the lab - Thursday - noon - is the last day for Kodachrome processing.

These will be used as part of the analog sample set we are creating thru the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Mellon Foundation....

First Moving Magazine Cover

Remember when we were talking about how everything was going to be digital with magazines on iPads soon? Well, Emma Watson is the first! I couldn't find the actual link but here's the video on my tumblr:

Words to KNOW! Urban Dictionary: PHOBAR

http://blogs.adobe.com/jnack/2010/12/urban-dictionary-phobar.html

PHOBAR: -adjective, Acronym for ‘PHOtoshopped* Beyond All Recognition.’ A play on the the more popular acronym FUBAR: ‘F’d Up Beyond All Recognition,’ PHOBAR** refers to an image, usually a photo of a person, that has been retouched and airbrushed with digital image manipulation software on a computer so significantly, that the person in the photo is barely recognizable.

Chernobyl

Thought this was really interesting, so I posted the link. Can't remember why I was researching Chernobyl but I found a great photo essay by a Magnum photographer and a video where he talks about his experience. http://www.mediastorm.com/publication/chernobyl-legacy

Some xray photography.
I thought this was pretty interesting and it reminded me of a more technical version of the scan-o-grams.

If any of you like funny cats as much as I do...

Weekend Exercise
DUE Monday 12/6/10

·      Experiment with all of the settings on your strobe and camera to see what works and doesn’t work for lighting, exposure, aesthetics
·      Experiment with exposure times, pop flash and night photography
·      Work in teams to help each other sort things out and to assist each other

Equipment
·      DSLR camera,
·      Variety of lenses
·      Strobe
·      Gretag MacBeth

Requirements
·      Read Chapter 11 Lighting in the “Essential Way”
·      Page 181 – 193 is about lighting in general and is helpful to review so you are thinking about placement of light and cause and effect.
·      Page 194 – 203 illustrates the different ways to use the strobe on location.

Demonstrate a variety of flash methods
Adjust your exposure based on your results
·      Page 196 shows a variety of examples
·      Page 197 talks about Inverse Square Law and how you might utilize that in your work
·      Direct on the camera
·      Off camera
·      Diffused strobe on and off the camera (use something translucent to soften the effect of the flash - like fabric or plastic - think of the examples from Tuesday’s lecture…)
·      Bounced Flash
·      Flash with ambient (existing) light
·      Flash as fill light
·      Dragged shutter with flash or slow synchro settings

Subject Matter/Concept

This is an exercise -  the subject matter is not critical. Your goal is to select an area that you can work comfortably in and experiment and determine the kinds of question you need answered for Monday’s class. Truly play, but document as much as possible = write down what you have done, settings, diagrams etc in your tear sheet journals. The more you document. The better you will understand how this works and the easier it will be to reproduce the results. Documentation allows you to clearly describe what you did and makes it easier for us to trouble shoot with you. Otherwise, we are all guessing.

Quantity

You should expose @ 200 frames or more…
Shoot enough to find what works

Feedback and Crits

From John Paul Caponigro's Blog

One of the most valuable aspects of a workshop is getting feedback on your work. You get it from a respected authority. You also get if from diverse participants. The combination of both is powerful. You’ll see your work more clearly, see it through others eyes, and find new ways of looking at your work.
One helpful approach is to ask a lot of questions.
Polls quickly give consensus on key issues. Which image is most memorable? Which image is strongest? Is it a 3, 4, or 5 star image?
How good is an image? First, identify the best thing about it. Then, to rate it, compare it to other images (your best or a respected artist’s) with same strengths.
Compare images. How do different images work together? Find formal echoes. Find thematic consistencies. Find shared stylistic traits. Sometimes, two images paired together are stronger than either one alone.
Identify outliers. Which image doesn’t fit with the others?
What could be done now to make it better? Crop? Adjust color? Dodge and burn?
What could be done in the future to make similar images better? Reframe? Return at a special time? Introduce a new element?

Social Documentary

I love this site. (Perfect for PJ)
This is what I want to do with my life-
take pictures of social issues, of reality. People.
The heartfelt and the pain.
How beautiful would that be?

Studio Links!

Hey guys, congrats on making it through your first quarter of college! We're doing a lot of studio stuff next quarter, so here are some links to get those creative juices going over break. These are mostly Advertising based photographers, but PJ and Fine Art people should benefit from these as well...

New York Times Lens blog

This is my favorite PJ blog. Like most news photo sites there are frequent posts of news pictures taken that day from the around the world, in this case every weekday. Though what makes it different is they also post some other cool things, like multimedia posts, and articles that accompany posts like previews and reviews of books and work of relevant photographers.

And to validate and commemorate all the anthropology Abe has taught us this quarter here is a recent post of a photographer who made most of his work while working side by side with anthropologist Margaret Mead.

I had a dream...

... the other day when I was napping after class and all of us were in it. We were all in Patti's wonderful, artsy, mansion in the middle of the woods in Connecticut (but by Connecticut I mean upstate New York) and we decided we wanted to go on a field trip. In order to get there, we had to fly. So Patti taught us all how to fly. Courtney and I were the best at flying but we did it too much that all of a sudden we couldn't fly anymore. All we had to do to fly was run and yell four words that I wish I remembered. Point being, Courtney got sick of not being able to fly and went to the train station next door to meet up with the rest of you at the field trip location. I was too stubborn and spent the rest of my dream running around campus, jumping and flapping my arms trying to fly.

The end.

Underwater Photography

I'm not sure if anyone is as obsessed with underwater photography as I am, but, since Nannette was playing videos from the class I have just been in the mindset of it today. I particularly love the advertising spreads in underwater photography and here are a few of my favorites, just in case anyone else likes this style.

Wildlife Photographer of the Year.

I thought some of these were pretty cool! Here's a sample:

Click for more!
Some are a bit gruesome though, i.e. the shot of the lion through the carcass, but I think that's the image I most respect. It takes a lot to get down to the level of a dead giraffe to take a picture of a hungry lioness.

And now for an actual relevant post:

I'm sorry I just have to.

All ya'lls faces!

Thank you all for doing some crazy faces. I definitely want to redo this project in the winter, because the lack of efficient lighting prevented me from capturing the various emotions clearly. (But it was fun nonetheless!) I will be using mostly "serious" faces in black and white.

You all are great!

Emily

Behind the scenes video

Hey guys, here's a really cool behind the scenes video of some still life/interior work. Click on showreel, then jump to about 3:45 to see the behind the scenes stuff. It's pretty incredible to see the amount of production involved in these shots, be sure to check out his still work too.

look at all yer beautiful faces!

I'm pretty happy with how these turned out. They could have been better if we had better lighting and if it wasn't my first time ever using gels. But thank you all for being so willing to have your faces painted!

Hey guys,
Here are a couple sample portraits, almost done editing all of them!

My Project....

Hey guys, as you know by now, I am doing a slightly different project because I will not be returning after this semester. I am doing a self-portrature project instead of shooting everyone in the class, showing the struggle I have been having.

Here are a few of the pictures I have taken...

Portrait Update

Hey guys, just posting some of the images that were in the running as the final shots but were not chosen. They are just a sampling of some people's sets.

I just wanted to thank everyone for showing me a little bit about who they are and helping me explore a style of photography that I would love to learn more about. Everybody looks great in their final portraits and I look forward to seeing how everyone else's projects came out!
