Monday's class reminder

Remember: We will meet in 1400 instead of the K lab tomorrow at 10.
See you all then!
Hey, I was just featured on a blog called Wood&Thread. It's run by a 4th year student here as well as a recent graduate of the Savannah college of art and design. It's a pretty cool blog and I'm glad they featured my submissions as their first post in quite some time.

Hey guys!

I had a lot of fun today, I hope everyone else did too! I've been working on a couple pictures so far and I really love how some of them turned out. I'm not gonna post anything that I'm actually going to turn in, but I figured I would post a picture of Brandon having sex with my camera to show you what I'm planning on doing/see what feedback you guys have. :]

I'm sure I'll be posting some stuff on flickr so I'll be sure to post those, too. Let me know what you think!

Zelda!

The Zelda Project
This group is creating their own photo-replications of the Legend of Zelda. It's very fairy-tale like, and I think they're using HD technology, because the photos don't even look real.

This video is a behind the scenes look of their photoshoot. (I want to go to California SO BADLY!)

Steve McCurry Portrait Emulation

Hello everyone!
So for my portrait project, I will be emulating the style of National Geographic photojournalist Steve McCurry. He has a very raw and organic style that he carries through all of his work. His work is very inspiring to me and many other photojournalists. So for my project, I'd like to photograph everyone in the class either in their dorm room or somewhere on campus that they like. I'd like to do this Monday (10/25/10) after our photo arts class, if possible. You don't have to wear anything specific, it is just a natural image. Take a look below at some of his other images. Thanks! Also, here are teh links to my personal blog and tumblr since everyone is posting.

RIT PhotoAssist Blog!

Hey guys, just wanted to let you know that RIT PhotoAssist has started a blog, that will be publishing submissions from all RIT students, alumni and faculty. We're using it as a place to show each other work since so much currently goes unseen if you're not in someone's class or don't personally know you. I highly encourage you all to submit some work, just make sure to read the submission guidelines carefully, and only submit your best work. You can view the blog and join the group at http://ritphotoassist.tumblr.com/, https://twitter.com/RITPhotoAssist, or http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=122360496655

Thanks,

I think this artists paintings are amazing. They look so realistic.

The ones 'through the car window in the rain' are fantastic.

Unfortunately, I cannot paste the photos here...I think they're too big... (I got an HTML/META error). Booo!

Nonetheless, I hope you find this site inspiring! (Especially for PJ majors).

Hey guys,

For my portraits I will be emulating the style of the Greek photographer Platon. He is a portrait photographer who uses uses the effects of distortion and perspective in a manner that would normally be considered an error, but in Platon's purposeful application they have become his trademark style for portraits. His use of perspective involves shooting his subject from below, which creates interesting relationships between the size of whatever part of the body is close to the lens and the traditional subject of portraiture, the face and torso. Here are some examples:

While Platon shoots in the studio, my plan is to use shoot with his unique perspective in the setting of an environmental portrait.

What I need from you:
  • My plan was to shoot everyone in their dorm room so that the background was a further exploration of the subject, but if you don't want to or can't be shot in your dorm we can go someplace else you live like a lounge or if neither of those are possibilities the next best place would be any place you can think of that you have a connection to like a studio, a lab, or a sports field.
  • For dress just something you feel comfortable in, whatever you wear for Victoria's project would be fine.
  • Please bring your camera and one other prop that tells something about you (such as piece of equipment for another of your interests)
  • Please set up a time with me that I can come and take 10 to 15 minutes to get the shots I need.
  • *Please use the Google calender I made to setup shooting times note a half hour slot you are available* It won't take 30 minutes I just want to set aside that much time to be safe.
Thank you. I hope to hear from you soon!

Well, since we're all tumblin...

http://victoriaelizabethcupcakes.tumblr.com/

Also, can I just confirm who I have previously planned shooting my portraits with? If we had set up a time and place earlier please email me again so that I will be able to double check everything. Otherwise, I will see all of you on Saturday. Be prepared to have something that makes you feel confident on (or at least bring it!).
Thanks!

Romain Laurent

Just found this guy. He's awesome, especially his Tilt series.

Here's his website

Oh, and Tumblr too.

My blog

Hey guys, I'm putting up a link to my blog in case anyone's interested. I figured since I'm always going around giving advise and suggestions it's only fair that you have an idea of my background and what I shoot.

willstyer.tumblr.com

The photographer I'm trying to emulate is Chris Buck. Basically he's a weird dude who likes to insert a lot non-sequiturs into his work that make you go "why?" Some examples:

For some more examples check out this link:

It's some pretty crazy stuff so I think it'll be fun to try to do.

Dawoud Bey pictures.

I figured out how to get the pictures working!
Here are some example of what I'm going to be doing for the class portraits.

If you click on photographs and Polaroid 20x24 you can see more examples.

The photographer I'll be emulating is Bruce Gilden. He takes different types of portraits but he usually shoots more random portraits of people on the streets, so my idea is to take photos of behind the scenes work during other people's shoots. I should be able to get everyone during those times but if for some reason I can't then I'll set up a time and place to meet people. Wear whatever you want and look however you want! All the photos will be in black and white

Thanks!
Courtney

Sorry, the pictures wouldn't show up so I had to put a link

Paint Yo Face

I would like to paint designs on everyone's face using various colors to create a mood or feeling. These designs can be tribal, high end fashion makeup, circus like, dramatic, or simple.

Can I take yo pitcha?

The photographer I'm going to be emulating is Martin Schoeller. He is very well known for his work with female bodybuilders, but since I don't think we have any of those in our class (and they freak me out anyway), I'm focusing on his celebrity portraits. The photos are all close-up headshots on bright, mostly blank white, backdrops, focusing on the details and emotion of the model's face.

I'm not picky about what you wear, because I probably won't get any of your clothing in the shot anyway, so just be comfortable! I've never worked in the studios or with the lighting here but I think that might be my best bet. So if anyone wants to help a sister out, it'd be much appreciated! That or if there's a nice clean backdrop somewhere that we're shooting other portraits, I may just snag them there. We'll see how it goes. :]

- Kelsey.

I'l be emulating Mark Laita. He has a book titled "Created Equal"
& basically he does very simple black and white portraits against
a gray background. As you can see the people are pretty much
opposites yet there i something similar about them. I'll try to do these
quickly as people are exiting class next week, just wear your normal clothes
I want you to look like yourself & I will later arrange according
to what I think is different about each of you.

Katie

Well I hope you all like leaves.

Dear Classmates,

Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott are an up and coming dynamic duo in the fashion and advertisement industry. Their whimsical editorial style immediately caught my eye and since then I can't stop "googling" at their work.

For my project I will be emulating their fairytale style, use of overhead lighting, faded blacks, and vintage jewel tone color scheme. I have changed my mind about the clothing I need you all to bring. If you could all bring your most interesting pair of jeans (dark wash is preferable) that would be much appreciated! If any of you have a plain white or red t-shirt (v-neck or crew neck is fine) it if not just let me know via e-mail (bmm9097@rit.edu) I can always make a run to Jo-ann's and grab a couple. I should be finished constructing the crate by friday (hopefully), if not monday at the latest. I aim to shoot during a block of time during one day next week. If you all could email me the day when your the least busy that would help me so much. From there I will try and have an 8 hour block open in the photo house studio ( NRH 4th floor, make a right out of the elevator go all the way down the hall). The shoot should hopefully only take about 15 minutes per person. Makeup wise, Girls if you could just prime your face accordingly (foundation, cover-up) and bring a black liner with you (if you have one). Don't worry about eye shadow or blush I will have those in the studio. This should be really fun and painless!

Victoria's Class Portraits...

Hey everyone,
For my class portraits I will be emulating a street fashion photographer. His name is Scott Schuman and is blog is The Sartorialist. Here is a link:

He typically has a fast set up. He sees someone he wants to photograph, asks them permission, then shoots and is done. I am hoping to get into that same mindset by having short shooting times. I have shot two peoples portraits and both lasted less than five minutes. I will be shooting at random, busy locations around campus so when we have a time set up we need to also choose a location that I have not already used.
They are similar to environmental portraits because they are capturing the person as they are and where they are. However, the main point is to capture something that is intriguing about them (not always having to be fashionable).
I only have one necessity from you guys and that is that you wear something that makes you feel good! When your confident, you look good no mater what. So throw on your favorite outfit, item of clothing, or color and meet me out there!

Please email me at vxs7229@rit.edu to set up a time and place to meet if we haven't already!
Thanks,
Victoria
Hi!
My portraits for the class will be emulating the styles of Dawoud Bey. He did a series of portraits with small groups of people together. In each individual photo there is one or two people who are the obvious subjects but there are snippits of the other people along the edges of the photo. When you place the photos next to each other they make one whole image of everyone together.

I would like to hopefully meet with everyone this Sunday (oct. 24.) at 2:00 pm out side of Gannet. I need to have several people at once and it shouldn't take long to do, maybe 30-40 min? Wear what ever you feel like wearing that day, what ever you would wear to class, something comfortable, doesn't matter. Unfortunately I'm having a hard time uploading some of his pictures so if you look up his name (Dawoud Bey) you should be able to see some of his stuff.

Please let me know ASAP if you are available this Sunday. I will bring treats for everyone too. :)

-Marie

Classmate Portraits

I'll be emulating George Hurrell, a famous hollywood photographer from around the post-World War II era. He shot stars like Humphrey Bogart, Greta Garbo, and many others. Some examples:
Gentlemen, wear suits if you have them. If not, go for a shirt and tie, or as last resort, just a button up shirt. Ladies, wear dresses if you can, if not, just wear what you think looks nice. These are fairly formal.
Also - I have gotten myself docked for 6 days, just in time for the shoots this weekend. So if anyone else will be using a studio or kind enough to check one out, it would be greatly appreciated if I could use it as well. =/

Thanks,
Joe.

Portrait Emulation

Hey everyone!
Put on your happy/sad/quirky face on, because I will be emulating Howard Schatz! He did the shots of actors portraying characters in various situations, entitled In Character. Please wear a neutral color shirt (preferably dark), but I am not picky. This will be really fun.

none

Let me know if you are unavailable this Saturday for the group session at my apartment 11-4 PM, and we can set up another time (and I can pose for your portrait, too).

Thanks!

Start Up Posts

First post should be about the description of your classmate portraits.
