Feedback and Crits

One of the most valuable aspects of a workshop is getting feedback on your work. You get it from a respected authority. You also get if from diverse participants. The combination of both is powerful. You’ll see your work more clearly, see it through others eyes, and find new ways of looking at your work.

One helpful approach is to ask a lot of questions.

Polls quickly give consensus on key issues. Which image is most memorable? Which image is strongest? Is it a 3, 4, or 5 star image?

How good is an image? First, identify the best thing about it. Then, to rate it, compare it to other images (your best or a respected artist’s) with same strengths.

Compare images. How do different images work together? Find formal echoes. Find thematic consistencies. Find shared stylistic traits. Sometimes, two images paired together are stronger than either one alone.

Identify outliers. Which image doesn’t fit with the others?

What could be done now to make it better? Crop? Adjust color? Dodge and burn?

What could be done in the future to make similar images better? Reframe? Return at a special time? Introduce a new element?

New York Times Lens blog

This is my favorite PJ blog. Like most news photo sites there are frequent posts of news pictures taken that day from the around the world, in this case every weekday. Though what makes it different is they also post some other cool things, like multimedia posts, and articles that accompany posts like previews and reviews of books and work of relevant photographers.

And to validate and commemorate all the anthropology Abe has taught us this quarter here is a recent post of a photographer who made most of his work while working side by side with anthropologist Margaret Mead.

I had a dream...

... the other day when I was napping after class and all of us were in it. We were all in Patti's wonderful, artsy, mansion in the middle of the woods in Connecticut (but by Connecticut I mean upstate New York) and we decided we wanted to go on a field trip. In order to get there, we had to fly. So Patti taught us all how to fly. Courtney and I were the best at flying but we did it too much that all of a sudden we couldn't fly anymore. All we had to do to fly was run and yell four words that I wish I remembered. Point being, Courtney got sick of not being able to fly and went to the train station next door to meet up with the rest of you at the field trip location. I was too stubborn and spent the rest of my dream running around campus, jumping and flapping my arms trying to fly.

I'm not sure if anyone is as obsessed with underwater photography as I am, but, since Nannette was playing videos from the class I have just been in the mindset of it today. I particularly love the advertising spreads in underwater photography and here are a few of my favorites, just in case anyone else likes this style.

Some are a bit gruesome though, i.e. the shot of the lion through the carcass, but I think that's the image I most respect. It takes a lot to get down to the level of a dead giraffe to take a picture of a hungry lioness.

Thank you all for doing some crazy faces. I definitely want to redo this project in the winter, because the lack of efficient lighting prevented me from capturing the various emotions clearly. (But it was fun nonetheless!) I will be using mostly "serious" faces in black and white.
