Words to KNOW! Urban Dictionary: PHOBAR

http://blogs.adobe.com/jnack/2010/12/urban-dictionary-phobar.html

PHOBAR: -adjective, Acronym for ‘PHOtoshopped* Beyond All Recognition.’ A play on the the more popular acronym FUBAR: ‘F’d Up Beyond All Recognition,’ PHOBAR** refers to an image, usually a photo of a person, that has been retouched and airbrushed with digital image manipulation software on a computer so significantly, that the person in the photo is barely recognizable.

Chernobyl

Thought this was really interesting, so I posted the link. Can't remember why I was researching Chernobyl but I found a great photo essay by a Magnum photographer and a video where he talks about his experience. http://www.mediastorm.com/publication/chernobyl-legacy

Some xray photography.
I thought this was pretty interesting and it reminded me of a more technical version of the scan-o-grams.

If any of you like funny cats as much as I do...

Here is a video of two cats playing patty-cake.

Weekend Exercise
DUE Monday 12/6/10

·      Experiment with all of the settings on your strobe and camera to see what works and doesn’t work for lighting, exposure, aesthetics
·      Experiment with exposure times, pop flash and night photography
·      Work in teams to help each other sort things out and to assist each other

Equipment
·      DSLR camera,
·      Variety of lenses
·      Strobe
·      Gretag MacBeth

Requirements
·      Read Chapter 11 Lighting in the “Essential Way”
·      Page 181 – 193 is about lighting in general and is helpful to review so you are thinking about placement of light and cause and effect.
·      Page 194 – 203 illustrates the different ways to use the strobe on location.

Demonstrate a variety of flash methods
Adjust your exposure based on your results
·      Page 196 shows a variety of examples
·      Page 197 talks about Inverse Square Law and how you might utilize that in your work
·      Direct on the camera
·      Off camera
·      Diffused strobe on and off the camera (use something translucent to soften the effect of the flash - like fabric or plastic - think of the examples from Tuesday’s lecture…)
·      Bounced Flash
·      Flash with ambient (existing) light
·      Flash as fill light
·      Dragged shutter with flash or slow synchro settings

Subject Matter/Concept

This is an exercise -  the subject matter is not critical. Your goal is to select an area that you can work comfortably in and experiment and determine the kinds of question you need answered for Monday’s class. Truly play, but document as much as possible = write down what you have done, settings, diagrams etc in your tear sheet journals. The more you document. The better you will understand how this works and the easier it will be to reproduce the results. Documentation allows you to clearly describe what you did and makes it easier for us to trouble shoot with you. Otherwise, we are all guessing.

Quantity

You should expose @ 200 frames or more…
Shoot enough to find what works
